What is the simplified acquisition threshold?

Simplified acquisition procedures let agencies buy faster, with less paperwork, below the simplified acquisition threshold (SAT) — raised to $350,000 on October 1, 2025. Purchases between the micro-purchase threshold ($15,000) and the SAT are generally reserved for small businesses, making this band ideal first-win territory.

Below the simplified acquisition threshold (SAT), contracting officers can use streamlined procedures — shorter solicitations (often RFQs), faster evaluation, quicker award. Below the much smaller micro-purchase threshold, buyers can simply purchase with a government card, no competition required.

These thresholds adjust for inflation every five years. As of October 1, 2025 the SAT rose from $250,000 to $350,000 and the micro-purchase threshold from $10,000 to $15,000 (FAR 2.101).

Two practical takeaways: the band between micro-purchase and the SAT is reserved for small businesses as a default, and these buys move fast — being responsive and easy to buy from matters more than proposal artistry.
