What is the 8(a) program and is it worth it?
SBA’s 8(a) Business Development program gives firms owned by socially and economically disadvantaged individuals a nine-year window with sole-source award authority and 8(a)-only competitions. For eligible firms that enter prepared, it is the most powerful credential in federal contracting.
Agencies can award 8(a) contracts directly — without full competition — up to program dollar thresholds, and many requirements compete only among 8(a) firms. Participants also get an SBA business opportunity specialist and access to the mentor-protégé program.
The catch is the clock: nine years, once per person, no renewal. Firms that certify before they have past performance and agency relationships burn the early years; the playbook is to enter ready and market hard from day one.
