What is a debrief and should I always request one?

A debrief is your legal right to feedback after a negotiated procurement decision — your evaluated strengths, weaknesses, and often the winner’s price. Request it within three days of notification, every time, win or lose. It is the cheapest competitive intelligence in the market.

On FAR Part 15 procurements you can request a debrief within three days of the award (or pre-award exclusion) notice. You will learn how evaluators scored you — intelligence that compounds across future bids. DoD’s enhanced debriefs even allow written follow-up questions.

Go in with prepared questions, take notes, and do not argue — the debrief also starts the clock for any protest, so listen for process errors rather than venting about the outcome.
